Drake Continues his Losing Streak as he Bets Against ”The Problem Child”

For most of us, fight sports like the UFC and boxing are entertaining events to watch. It’s also enjoyable to place a few small bets here and there to spice up the action and see if a small amount of money can be made from the match. But some people take it to the next level, betting huge sums on specific fighters, winners, and outcomes. However, this doesn’t always pan out in favour of the bettor. In fact, as has just happened to rapper Drake, it can all go horribly wrong with huge sums of money lost in the blink of an eye. And this isn’t the first time either.

This time around, Drake placed a bet on Nate Diaz to beat ”The Problem Child” Jake Paul in a boxing match. Drake clearly thought the former UFC legend might be on for a win, maybe banking on Diaz’s 15 years of UFC experience to overcome his younger opponent. In fact, he was so sure that he placed a whopping US$250,000 on Diaz to win. Unfortunately, this is where things started to go wrong for the rapper.

What happened in the fight?

The fight took place in Dallas and, to be fair, it was a hard-fought one that went the full ten rounds. Impressively, this was the first time that Jake Paul had ever gone this distance. And, it was the first time Diaz had participated in a boxing match — previously he had only been fighting in mixed martial arts bouts within the UFC. So really, this was a surprise to everyone.

Paul actually knocked Diaz down in the fifth round. But, unbelievably, the older fighter still picked himself up and continued boxing, likely giving some hope to Drake and his bet. He even did so while having two black eyes.

Perhaps the biggest mistake of the night though was Drake proudly showing off his bet slip on social media before the fight. He shared it on his Instagram account, showing just how much he had bet on Diaz taking the win. If this was to come through, his US$250,000 bet could have actually paid him US$1 million making it a pretty worthwhile option.

Worse for Drake, he even acknowledged just how strong Jake Paul actually is. He just said he couldn’t bet against a Diaz brother, which is a totally reasonable reason to place the bet.

Drake’s curse

The only problem now is that it looks like Drake is somewhat cursed when it comes to sports betting. This is far from the first big sports bet he’s lost in a rather dramatic fashion. He’s made a fair few high-profile sporting bets over this last year. And unfortunately, not many of them have actually paid out in his favour.

For instance, one of the wagers he recently lost was when he placed a bet on Argentina to beat France in the World Cup Final. Unfortunately, he had additional stipulations that it had to be done within normal time as well. For that bet, he lost an impressive US$1 million.

Previously, in October, Drake had lost another big bet on crypto online casino Stake.com. This time he lost US$684,000 when wagering that Barcelona would beat Real Madrid in El Classico. Needless to say, this didn’t go as planned either. If that wasn’t enough, he also bet on the UFC star Israel Adesanya hoping he would beat out the Brazilian fighter Alex Pereira. Once again, this didn’t work out for Drake, and he actually lost a whopping US$2 million that time around.

Paul is not good luck for Drake

What’s even worse about this Diaz vs Paul bet is that this isn’t the first time Drake has actually lost money when Jake Paul is involved. In fact, it’s the second time this year that Paul has lost him money. That first time, back in February, Drake actually put money on Paul to win and got let down. The fight involved Paul against Tommy Fury in an exhibition match. Unfortunately, while again it was a close-run thing, it didn’t go in Drake’s favour. This time, Jake Paul actually was defeated by a split decision to Fury. Drake didn’t lose quite as much that time round though, only US$400,000.

So, not only does Drake not have such a great track record when it comes to betting, but he also places some very high stake bets. And, he then doubles down and actually posts publicly about this too.

What’s even funnier is that Jake Paul gets in on the action too. After that first bet in February, Paul said he was sorry that he had cost Drake that money. He even made a joke to say that it was Drake’s fault that he lost simply because of the pressure of that big bet. Luckily, that was not the first time Drake has bet on Paul. And, in previous years, Paul has most definitely come through for Drake, winning a lot of money in the past. In fact, Paul claimed Drake had won more on him in the past so the US$400,000 loss wasn’t really much of a big deal for Drake at all. He’s probably not wrong.

More to come

Since this first Diaz vs Paul fight, Drake’s going to have another chance at winning, or losing, big! And that’s because right when the fight finished, the two contestants decided to have a rematch. This time round though, it’s going to be Diaz’s forte as the fight will be an MMA fixture, not a boxing one. The match is also going to be a US$10 million showdown, which is going to tempt a whole lot of big bets and viewership when it starts.

So, how’s Drake going to bet this time around? Will he double down and stick with his initial fighter and choose Diaz now in his comfort zone? Or, will he actually go back to Paul and see if he will come through for him this time?

Whatever the bet, maybe the rest of us go the opposite to avoid Drake’s betting curse. Unless he’s about to break it and get things right for once.
